Twenty Eleven Two Nine

2011 WCR 29er by MSC Bikes

Two years in development and 3 different prototypes, get ready for the MSC 29er!

MSC Bikes product managers and engineers have once again proven their experience and their new design philosophies to create a 29er that looks stunning and performs like no other.

Our goal was to create a no compromise 29er. We wanted a 29er that could handle the rough terrain, be super stiff under power and still have excellent trail feel. Using a heavily hydroformed tubeset crafted from our proprietery CaTal aluminium, we have created a frame which stops trail buzz dead in its tracks.

You can race it, trail-ride it or do all-day backcountry epics - with some Spanish pizazz to boot. MSC Bikes continues to redefine the benchmark with our lightweight 26" full suspension bikes and the new do-it-all Hunter Enduro bike. We continue this tradition by creating a 29er which will raise the standards once again.

Many racers and riders who have had the opportunity to test our 29er prototype have mentioned that it feels like a natural evolution of a 26" bike, handling is spot on, vertically compliant and exploits all the advantages of the 29er concept.

Setting the standard - Ultralight Carbon chainguide

MSC Bikes raises the benchmark once again, creating the lightest chainguide on the market. Not only phenomenally light(155 grams) but extremely strong and durable.

We will go over the details of the Ultralight chainguide and how all the pieces fit together to create one of the best looking chainguides on the market and not to mention the lowest weight.

Specifications

The best materials were put together to reach the best weight/performance/strength ratio. Keeping in mind the specific use of this chainguide, we made sure that this is able to handle some very extreme riding - And has been ridden by Factory Rider Mik Pascal at the French Nationals

Here are the specifications:

  • Suitable for three chainring sizes: 36, 38 and 40 teeth by using the Tri-Fit system
  • Integrated, replaceable and optimized bashguard protector. It has been optimized to have the maximum impact absorption with low weight
  • Suitable for ISCG05 chainguide mount (http://www.iscg05.com)
  • Independent angular adjustment for upper and lower side
  • World lightest aluminum pulley
  • Ergal aluminum bolts
  • 155 grams (inc. ISCG mounting bolts)

Design

Tri-Fit System

Adjustment system to regulate the distance between chainring and pulley according to the chainring’s size. The ideal distance for all chain transmissions is the chain pitch (below). In a bicycle chain case, the pich is 12,7mm.

12.7mm. The optimum distance between pulley and chainring

Currently there is no chainguide on the market that has such precise adjustment. The majority are using a sliding hole system. Which we can see below.

e-Thirteen utilising the sliding hole for adjustment

We have developed a precise and user-friendly adjustment system. We call it Tri-Fit.

MSC Tri-Fit. Developed and exclusive to MSC Bikes

The Tri-Fit System consists of 3 holes which allow the assembly of 3 different chainring sizes (36t, 38t and 40t) and an additional hole for perfect pulley alignment.

Tri-Fit adustment holes, that accurately sets the guide for 40t, 38t or 36t chainrings.

Angular Adjustment

The Ultralight guide is the only low weight chainguide with independent angular adjustment between the upper and lower guide. This adjustment system allows a perfect fit to each bike.

Super precise: The angular adjustment allows easy fit to all kinds of bikes

Carbon Backplate - Inspiration from nature

The carbon backplate supports the upper guide piece. Usually, it is made of metal sheet or flat carbon panel.

We were looking for a solution to make it stiffer and lighter at the same time. "I realized that curved leafs from trees were stiffer and thinner than flat leafs."

This concept can be easily demonstrated using paper. The result is the same.We have used the inspiration from nature to shape our design. By using an exclusive mold and shapeable carbon fibre sheets, we can shape our component exactly the way we want it.

The result is awesome! We have obtained a super stiff component with only 2mm thickness.

Carbon backplate with upper guide assembled

 Upper and Lower guides

The flat panels are made of carbon fibre. This way we can achieve a stiffer, lighter and thinner panel.

We have used water jet cutting to produce spare parts in a efficient and cost effective manner. Carbon fibre aesthetics are always an upgrade.

The lower panel of guide has a windows to sight the high-end Ultralight pulley underneath. The pulley itself has mechanized gaps which lower the weight without diminishing the stiffness and resistance of the component. At 5.5 grams for the pulley it is currently the lightest pulley on the market. It also keeps chainguide noise to a minimum

Optimised Bashguard

This component is made of polycarbonate due it its strength and ease of machining.

A polycarbonate bashguard is not only strong but can be easily shaped. The purpose of this component is to shield the chainring from heavy impacts from all possible directions. In order to elaborate the ideal design, we simulate impacts by using "Finite Element  Method" (below). This way we were able to accomplish a design that fulfills all the requirements of a strong chainguide and with absolute minimum use of material.

Finite Element Method to simulate forces in all possible directions on the bashguard. The impact is transmitted to a stiff CNC aluminium central plate which joins all the components together.

Bolts

All bolts, except for frame mounting bolts, are made of Aluminium 7075T6 (Ergal) with M8x1 thread, they are also hollow. A fine pitch thread also allows a stronger interface.

Aluminium threads have better locking properties which helps prevent un-intended loosening.

9 point 7kg - Lightest trail bike on our planet.

Fanatic. We had a customer recently spec up a new Zion Carbon, a true weight weenie at heart and XC fan but looking at stepping into some of the bigger stuff. "I could have gone lighter, but I wanted a bike that I can ride all day long without any hassles"

Jaw dropping. This Zion has been built with a very moderate spec but has achieved an astonishing weight that most of the "other" XC bikes struggle to reach. The Zion is in its own category and it's all class. Lets not forget the Zion has 147mm/6" of travel in the rear and the frame is built to chew up and spit out the rough stuff and with the MTS you can switch out the travel to 127mm/5" if you feel like it. Is that like having your cake and eating it?

Versatility. "I'm an XC guy and didn't want to lose the flickability and quick handling of a steeper head angle. With the TALAS set in 110mm, the head angle is still steep enough to handle tight and tech terrain, but then can easily be set back to 150mm to handle all the rough chop. Overall I am pretty stoked"

Ultralight. Part of the total lack of weight of this bike is from the careful selection of MSC Ultralight components, by far some of the lightest and best looking parts you will ever see, combined with the low weight of the Zion Carbon frameset you have a perfect combination.

Amazing. Some serious bike hotness and not to mention truckloads of genius engineering.  Stiff carbon rocker, Ti hardware, 100% sealed bearings, integrated housing, beautiful uni-directional carbon layup and clean and simple decals. Check out some of the pics of the this build. Specs below.

MSC Hunter ridden!

The MSC Hunter was built from the ground up to conquer the European Enduro racing format, 170mm of rear wheel travel, super stiff chassis and super balanced suspension that climbs as well as it descends - perfect for Australian trails. This is not a "hardened" up XC/Trail bike either, the Hunter has been engineered from feedback from some of the best DH and Freeride riders of the last decade.

After testing riding the new Hunter, Javi Echavarria writes about the new MSC Hunter - which sums up how the Hunter performs in the real life.

"It's been long time I wanted a bicycle like this. Climbing and reaching every corner of our mountains to seize the most technical downhill areas and really speed it up.

Suspensions are super balanced and sometimes do not seem to have 170mm of travel behind you ... but a lot more. Berms are very easy to pass through, because the swingarm is very stiff and geometry is also very well designed to adapt the bike to the pedaling sections or to the climbing ones, as in the downhill tracks.

Rising up or down the adjust seat post on my own, adjusting the travel of your fork or setting the Pro Pedal compression of the rear shock gives the rider many options on the ride.

Next year I'm planning a trip to Whistler and if I had no choice but to take a single bicycle for this trip, no doubt, I would choose the Hunter as a single bike you can pedal on very long trails or descend on the most demanding bikepark tracks. "

MSC260 Wheelset - Prototyping

We currently have our MSC300 wheelset available which weighs only 1180grams, but we decided to make it even lighter! We are working on a lighter version of the MSC300, named MSC260. Our prototypes are already weighing in at 1056.5 grams for the full wheelset.

To get a wheel this light and strong we had to pioneer a few new technologies which are totally exclusive to MSC Bikes.

  • ROBOT MOLDING® - A first for the cycling industry, a specialised robot lays the carbon fibre precisely in the mold. Each fibre is distributed evenly and 100% parallel.
  • VACUUM CHAMBER® - A specialised machine that compacts the carbon fibres and resins like no other has done before - Carbon in its purest form.
  • INNER MOLD® - We produce our carbon frames with this technology, we are now working on creating some seriously lightweight components with this method.
  • Polygonal Inner Profile® - A raised spoke bed allows a reduced spoke tension tension and helps us get to the astonishing rim weight of 260grams.

MSC Magik Freeride stem

Let us introduce to you the MSC Magik Stem. Lightweight, strong and the steerer bolts are gone!

The MSC Magic stem has recently won the most innovative component award at Eurobike 2010. The MSC Magik stem was designed by Ricard Bages Estopa, from MSC Bikes Spain. This unique design combines both form and function with a super clean steerer interface which also increases strength and rigidity. You can now have a Freeride stem that weighs as low as 108 grams. Some believe in magic, others just rely on pure engineering.

MTS = Super Tricky

We have had quite a few questions on how the MTS, or Multi Travel System works. The MTS is found on the Zion and the Vendetta and it allows two travel options without altering the bike geometry. Tricky eh?

The Zion Alu and Carbon models use the same carbon link and allow two travel options of 147mm/6" or 127mm/5" - There is no change in wheelbase, head angle or seat angle - Just the suspension travel.  Here you can see the MTS system on the Zion Carbon - Yes, that is a 100% carbon link. The MTS is absolutely exclusive to MSC Bikes.

So just imagine the possibilities with this technology....

MSC Hunter

During the last two years MSC Bikes engineers have worked hard on developing a new suspension system that offers more sensitivity using air-shocks, reaching coil spring shock responsiveness. The Hunter has 170mm of super plush rear travel, climbs like a mountain goat but can hammer the downhills like a bike with more travel.

We never leave out the small details, we have included internal cable routing, heavily hydro-formed tubing, a super stiff micro-link to prevent lateral flex and increase rear shock performance, ISCG5 tabs, Direct Mount front mech and MSC's own telescopic seat post. So what are you waiting for? The Hunter will inspire you!
